THE SOUND EXPRESS – The Sound Express (Anette, 1969)

Instrumental
International relevance: ***

No-one can deny that The Sound Express was vastly inspired by Hansson & Karlsson, but while their lone and very rare album is derivative and not as refined as their role models, it has enough merits to save it from being entirely superfluous. The rough, almost basement-like sound gives the whole album a menacing feel that Hansson & Karlsson never quite had thanks to their level of sophistication. You could call this a garage equivalent of the better known duo.

”Stand Up for Mr. G.W.” features a snippet from Leonard Bernstein's ”West Side Story”, but fret not – keyboardist Tillbjörn Perzon and drummer Ingemar Landén simply isn't skilled enough to turn into The Nice.

The stand out track however is undoubtedly the first on the album, the mean ”Gothique” with a wah wah guitar sneaking around before suddenly bursting out into a solo like an unruly demon materializing from out of some dark dimension.
